WorLDSmiths keeps most of the personal information you give us in strictest confidence. We do not sell it to anyone, we do not share it with any other organization, we do not allow other WorLDSmiths members to see it. Below is a description of each piece of information we request, how we use it, and whether it's visible to anyone else.
User name
This is the name by which everyone on WorLDSmiths knows you and looks you up. By providing a user name for your identification, we are able to create an environment where you can communicate with others, but still remain anonymous until you decide to reveal your personal information to someone else.
Password
No one but you knows your password. Not even we can look it up. It's stored in an encrypted form. If you forget your password, we cannot tell you what it is--we can only send a new one to your registered e-mail address. This approach provides the maximum security for passwords.
No one from WorLDSmiths will ever ask for your password. If anyone does, do not give it to them!
Name, address, zip/postal code, phone number
Members of WorLDSmiths are entrusting their copyrighted material with each other. It's important for us to know who everyone is in case a problem arises. These pieces of personal information are kept confidential. We ask for them for the protection of your creative work. We will not share this personal information with anyone, including other WorLDSmiths members.
City, state/province, sex, favorite genre
This information appears on your profile for all WorLDSmiths members to see. This helps our community to get to know each other better.
E-mail address
This is kept confidential from everyone, but we use it to correspond with you on occasion. The first correspondence is to verify that your e-mail address is valid. This is one way to help avoid fraudulent registrations. Another possible correspondence we may send you is a new password if you've forgotten yours.
We will not use your e-mail address to send you junk mail, and we won't share it with any other organization or with other WorLDSmiths members.
Birthday
Sharing your birthday with us is optional. If you enter it, it will appear on the WorLDSmiths calendar where all members can see it. If you leave your birthday blank, it will not appear on the calendar.
We encourage you to share your birthday, because this also helps us develop a community of friends.
Photos
Uploading of photos is entirely voluntary. If you upload them, they will be visible to all WorLDSmiths members. Photos are encouraged, and are a great way to make WorLDSmiths feel like a real community.
Be aware, however, that your photos can also be downloaded by other WorLDSmiths members and used in any way they choose, even though our policy forbids this. We strongly recommend you do not upload any photos that you want to maintain control over.
Before a photo becomes visible online, it must be approved by us after you upload it.
Manuscripts
WorLDSmiths members share their manuscripts with each other online so they can be critiqued. That's the purpose of a writers group. But because these manuscripts are kept private among WorLDSmiths members, they are not considered published. The authors retain the copyright to their own manuscripts and can still sell first time publication rights to a publisher.
